Innovation The fast pace of technology innovation is both the media’s biggest threat, and greatest opportunity. A dramatic increase in an accessible audience, particularly through mobile, as well as an increase in competition, has upended established business models and consumer habits. Yet this technology creates enormous opportunities for innovative media companies and public service journalism.

Mobile and the digitization of radio in particular offers the opportunity to distribute content to ever-wider audiences. Africa, with radio and mobile phones as dominant platforms, is at the nexus of this upheaval. Realizing these opportunities will take a deeper understanding of technology adaptation among African media owners and operators, especially for small and medium-sized companies. This will require new partnerships and business models that bring together traditional media players and innovators.
